The first EJI historic marker in Maryland will be installed at a ceremony in Annapolis on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 10:00 am. The ceremony will take place on Calvert Street across from the Arundel Center, the former site of the jail from which Henry Davis was abducted by a white mob, marched through predominantly black communities and then lynched in 1906. The plaque will memorialize the five documented racial terror lynchings that occurred in Anne Arundel County between 1875 and 1911.
The effort to install the marker was organized by AA CO Connecting the Dots: Remembrance and Reconciliation Project.
The marker unveiling will include the awards ceremony for the essay scholarship contest that the Coalition is organizing. The scholarship awardee(s) will be eligible for prizes totaling at least $5000 awarded by the EJI.
